Alois "Campole" Aglianico, Campania IGP '21

The Alois family’s history in the Caserta province of Campania reaches back to the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, when they supplied fine silks to royalty. In the early 1990s, Michele started a new family tradition by founding a winery focused on both indigenous varieties as well as reviving forgotten ones. Today, his son Massimo works at the winery, continuing to develop the future of the estate.

The fruit for this 100% Aglianico, Campania’s classic red grape, was manually harvested from the volcanic soils of the family’s vineyards in the foothills of the Caiatini Mountains, near Mount Vesuvius. The grapes were pressed into stainless steel tank, with maceration carried out for 16 days with pump-overs. The wine was then transferred to large Italian oak casks (80 hectoliters) to complete fermentation and aged in bottle for eight months.

Dark plum aromas are met with earthy, savory notes on the palate, with hints of brambly raspberry, black pepper, olive, and earth. With firm tannins and moderate acidity, this well-structured, rustic red pairs with braised pork chops with tomatoes, anchovies, and rosemary; bistecca alla fiorentina (traditional Florentine steak); or a simple Margherita pizza.
